Dr. Johnson was raised in the small farming community of Aylmer, Ontario. She attended University of Waterloo where she obtained her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1982. Betty graduated on the Deans Honours list and won the award of excellence for clinical performance. Betty started her career in Optometry in Burlington where she practiced for four years. During that time Betty also spent time working part time in Oakville and as a clinical supervisor at the University of Waterloo: School of Optometry. Betty and her physiotherapist husband Darryl moved to the Lynden area in 1985. Betty and Darryl fell in love with the area and in 1989 Betty opened her own Optometry practice at her present Dundas location. Betty became an active member of the community and was one of the first women members of the Rotary Club of Dundas. Betty and Darryl have raised both a daughter and a son who both attended Highland Secondary School. Betty completed her therapeutic drug training in 2009. Dr. Johnson’s practice has grown to become “Dundas Optometry Clinic” which now includes two partners and three associates. When not at the office serving the needs of her patients, Betty enjoys spending time outdoors snowshoeing and x-country skiing in the winter, while in warmer weather she enjoys golfing, hiking, and kayaking.

Dr. Laura Thomas, a Hamilton native, graduated from the University of Waterloo Optometry program in 1994 on the Dean’s Honours List, after working on her undergraduate degree of Honours Biology and Psychology at the University of Guelph and McMaster University. Over the next 9 years she practiced in both North Hamilton and Ancaster optometry offices, joining the Dundas Optometry in 2002. She became a partner in the practice in 2007 and completed her therapeutic drug training in 2009. Dr. Thomas really enjoys the challenges that a full scope optometry practice provides and appreciates the relationships she develops with her patients. She has a special interest in children’s vision and sees kids referred in by family physicians, pediatricians and other patients from across the city. She feels privileged to provide eye care to the Dundas/Hamilton community and she works very hard to keep up to date with new treatments and technologies as they develop. When not wearing her “eye doctor” cap, Dr. Thomas enjoys spending time with her husband, two active children, and friends. She enjoys downhill skiing, running, hiking, kayaking, canoeing and camping.

Dr. Katie Mann joined Dundas Optometry as an Associate in 2009 and was thrilled to become a partner in 2015. Born and raised in West Hamilton, she was a patient here at Dundas Optometry, where Dr. Johnson became her mentor. She was also inspired to pursue eye care as a career by the three generations of ophthalmologists in her own family. After completing her Bachelor of Science at Queen's University, Dr. Mann went on to obtain her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo, graduating in 2009 on the Dean’s Honour List. During her final year of studies, she completed internships here at Dundas Optometry, Image Optometry in Vancouver, and the Utah Eye Institute in Salt Lake City. Upon graduation, Dr. Mann traveled with a classmate to Ghana to volunteer with Unite for Sight, an NGO committed to providing eye care to remote communities in the developing world. For the first few years of her career, she split her time between Dundas Optometry and Spadina Optometry in downtown Toronto, and as of 2015 she is at Dundas Optometry full-time. She lives in Burlington with her husband and two sons and when she's not at work, she enjoys travelling, skiing, and spending time with her family at their Muskoka cottage.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Dr. Daina Sanderson set her career goal of Optometrist at an early age. She graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2004 with her Honours Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees. Part of her training included internships in Edmonton, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario, with focus on pediatric exams, specialized contact lens fittings, and diagnosis and treatment of various ocular infections and diseases. Dr. Sanderson is an active member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists, the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the Hamilton and District Society of Optometrists. Happily married and a mother of two great boys, Dr. Sanderson has a keen interest in the health and well-being of families; she ensures that this is a tenet of her services at Dundas Optometry Clinic. In her spare time, Dr. Sanderson enjoys skiing, curling and sewing, while balancing work and a busy home life.

Dr. Aynsley Tinkham was born and raised in Mississauga. She obtained an Honours Bachelors Degree in Science from the University of Western Ontario and completed her Doctor of Optometry degree in 2014 at the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. During her final year of studies, she completed internships at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts with a focus on pediatric care, low vision and ocular disease as well as the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts where she provided primary eye care for war veterans. After graduation, she worked with a group of Ophthalmologists at Scarborough Eye Associates/Bochner Eye Institute in Scarborough managing and co-managing patients with ocular disease. Dr. Tinkham is highly dedicated to providing each patient with a full and comprehensive eye examination. She is a firm believer in patient education and prides herself in taking the time to address all her patients’ concerns and needs. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, golfing, swimming and watching football.

Dr. Mariam Hermiz grew up in Leamington, a small town in Southern Ontario, and moved to Burlington in 2009. After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, she obtained her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo. She graduated on the Dean’s Honour List and received the Alcon Award for Excellence in Contact Lenses. During her clinical rotations, Dr. Hermiz interned with ophthalmologists at the Eye Centers of South Florida where she gained experience in diagnosing and treating eye diseases. She discovered a special interest for specialty contact lenses during her primary care clinical rotations. She also participated in a mission trip to Honduras, where she helped provide eye care and glasses to the residents of Tela. Dr. Hermiz is excited to join the Dundas community and looks forward to providing the best of care to the residents of Dundas and surrounding areas. She is fluent in both English and Chaldean/Assyrian. In her spare time, she explores new hiking paths and attends theatrical and musical performances.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Dr. Kathleen Leonard graduated with honours from the Arts & Science Program at McMaster University. She then went on to complete her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo on the Dean's Honours list. During her second summer as an optometry student, Dr. Leonard had the opportunity to travel to Ecuador on a student humanitarian mission, providing free eye exams and donated glasses. She continues to volunteer within her community today and hopes to participate in more mission trips to come! During her externship in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Leonard took particular interest in treating ocular disease. She also had rotations in northern Saskatchewan and around southern Ontario. She is excited to provide quality optometric care to patients of all ages here in Dundas. Her interests outside of the office include dancing, writing, hiking, and travelling.
